Felipe Carrillo Puerto, August (Galu Comunicación).– Inhabitants of the Mayan Zone in this municipality of Quintana Roo province (southern México) have chosen to turn to traditional remedies as a mean to prevent respiratory diseases, or, in it´s proper case, as a naturist treatment in suspected cases of COVID-19, before the lack of drugs that could combat it, said the leader of tenants of the municipal market of this town, René Bravo Ortiz.
The leader of the merchants of that supply center added that the demand for natural products, which are traditionally considered medicinal, has been increasing as a result of the health contingency, due to the pandemic.
He recalled that they are of great help for the prevention of respiratory diseases after being prepared with herbs and leaves that are abundant in this Mayan Zone.
Also remarked that it´s local knowledge that many organic and natural products are the basis for the development of alternative remedies for different diseases.
Therefore, Bravo Ortiz considered that consumers have prioritized the purchase of products in recent months, to strengthen the immune system in order to prevent the effects of the new coronavirus.
The interviewee highlighted that among the products with the highest demand are honey, ginger, turmeric, chamomile and eucalyptus, “holy leaf” (momo) guava leaf, which are used as alternative remedies based on infusions or teas.
He stated that traditional remedies have been on the rise, because so far, there is not a pharmacological treatment yet for the coronavirus, so families in the Mayan Zone seek to consume natural products hoping to prevent respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
Finally, Bravo Ortiz said that the consumption of these products allows local producers, affected by the situation, to generate income, because the contingency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has generated economic stress, but the people of the Mayan Zone have sought how to cope with the difficult situation.
